RBS boss who headed toxic Global Restructuring Group to face court

Derek Sach, former boss of RBS’s toxic Global Restructuring Group, will give evidence in a case starting next week

The banker at the heart of Royal Bank of Scotland’s restructuring group scandal will be in court as a witness for the first time.

Derek Sach, former boss of RBS’s toxic Global Restructuring Group (GRG), will give evidence in a case starting next week brought by Oliver Morley, 49, a property developer who took out a loan from RBS and is suing it for damaging his business.  He claims that GRG placed him under ‘economic duress’ which led to some of his assets being seized by RBS in 2010 and sold.

This week, Morley won the right to call to court Sach and Donald Workman, another senior ex-RBS employee.

The alleged misconduct occurred in the wake of the financial crisis, when the banking system was at risk of collapse and the Government owned more than 80 per cent of RBS following a £45.5billion taxpayer bailout.

The Asset Protection Agency (APA), a now-disbanded Government agency, insured more than £280billion of RBS’s bad loans.

Morley wants to prove the Government pressurised GRG to ruin small businesses so it could take their assets and sell them to boost the bank’s profits.

Emails, believed to be from the APA’s chief credit officer Brian Scammell, said the bank would be able to extract more money if it squeezed business customers.

Mr Justice Kerr, at pre-trial hearing, has allowed Morley to force more documents and emails out of RBS.

Atalanta boss hopes English fans 'BLOW up VAR' like the Super League

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has pleaded with English fans who cancelled the to do the same to VAR.

The 64-year-old was furious with a decision to chalk off Ruslan Malinovskyi’s goal in their 1-0 defeat to Fiorentina on Sunday.

Hans Hateboer was standing in an offside position as he tried to chase through a long ball which neither he or his marker could get on the end of but Malinovskyi was there to find the back of the net.

Furious boss Gian Piero Gasperini has called on English supporters to ‘blow up VAR’

The linesman flagged offside and it was confirmed after a check by VAR, though there was fury from the Atalanta camp over the decision as Hateboer didn’t touch the ball.

As reported by , Gasperini described VAR as a ‘dangerous tool that affects results’.

He said: ‘The Malinovskyi episode is just the latest.

I’m still angry, VAR has become a very dangerous tool that affects the results. Unfortunately, it’s used in situations that are very clear, which then become distorted.

He referenced English supporters’ part in forcing their teams to withdraw from the failed European Super League project

‘You don’t understand when the referee decides and when VAR decides.

This makes you think negatively, and it’s a bad thing, the worst that can happen to football.

‘I hope that the English fans who had the Super League cancelled, will also blow up the VAR system, which is a tool that if badly used really creates great dangers for football.’

There was public fury in England after plans were announced for the ‘big six’ to join the European Super League.

Malinovskyi thought he had netted the equaliser in what proved to be a 1-0 defeat for Atalanta

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United and Tottenham were part of the 12 European giants who said they would take part in the project.

Less than 48 hours later, all six English teams withdrew after protests among their supporters.

VAR was introduced to Serie A in the 2017-18 season, but much like in England, has faced criticism for marginable decisions.

The costly decision for Atalanta leaves them fifth in Serie A – 12 points off leaders AC Milan.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini is slammed as 'irresponsible'

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has been labelled ‘irresponsible’ after admitting he travelled to Valencia for his side’s tie despite displaying  symptoms.

And the Spanish club have now called for an investigation to be carried out into the Italian boss’s conduct.

Atalanta’s visit to the Mestalla on March 10 was one of the final matches to take place in before the season was postponed and lockdown kicked in.

The game saw Atalanta progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after triumphing 8-4 on aggregate, but the game was played behind closed doors.

Gian Piero Gasperini has been slammed by Valencian government officials for travelling to the area with coronavirus symptoms

Speaking to La Gazzetta dell Sport, Gasperini previously said: ‘I felt ill the day before the Valencia game, then on the afternoon of the match I felt even worse.

‘If you look at the pictures, I did not look good on the bench.

That was March 10. The two nights afterwards, I did not sleep well. I didn’t have a fever, but I felt like I did.’

Now local government officials in Valencia have expressed their dismay at the 62-year-old’s behaviour, while the club are expecting UEFA and Italian health authorities to sanction the Serie A boss.

Ana Barcelo – health minister for the Valencian Community told Marca: ‘He acted irresponsibly.

‘He knew he was coming to a high-risk area. He shouldn’t have travelled.

‘The news, in any case, confirms why the match had to be played behind closed doors, like it did.’
